Hot summer days mean pool parties and ocean swims, yet chlorine and seawater can ruin the texture and lifespan of hair extensions without proper after-swim treatment. Follow these straightforward steps to protect your extensions right after getting out of the water.
1. Rinse right away
Flush hair with cool fresh water immediately to wash away chlorine, salt and residue, even if you cannot shampoo fully yet. This prevents stiff, damaged hair.
2. Gentle shampooing
Use sulfate-free shampoo made for extensions. Rub roots softly with fingertips only; do not scrub extension hair, and let suds flow down strands while rinsing.
3. Condition mid-length to ends only
Never put conditioner near bonding areas. Apply product from mid-hair to ends, leave for 3–5 minutes then rinse fully to moisturize without loosening bonds.
4. Detangle carefully
Comb from ends upward in sections with a wide-tooth comb. Hold the extension base firmly to avoid pulling; use detangling spray for stubborn knots.
5. Dry properly
Pat dry with a microfiber towel instead of rubbing. Air dry when possible. If blow-drying, use cool air and always apply heat protectant before hot styling tools.
6. Smart backup choice
Pack removable hair toppers for beach or pool days. Take off permanent extensions before swimming, tie your natural hair into a low bun and wear a hat to avoid unnecessary damage.
